The main function of the protection is to provide a small thermal airspace around the water pipe, so that the pipe has enough space for expanding and contraction caused by temperature changes. If there is no such space, the pipe, when trying to expand, would receive enormous stress because concrete does not expand. This stress can lead to deformation of the water pipe wall, and, accordingly, very unpleasant consequences can occur when the pipe leakage is present in the screed.

For convenience, corrugated pipes are marked in two colours: blue and red – for hot and cold water supply, respectively.
